Whiskey Review: Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon

Whiskey Review: Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon

Introduction

In today’s review, we’re diving into Wild Turkey Rare Breed, a barrel-proof bourbon whiskey that clocks in at 116.8 proof. Up until now, the only Wild Turkey expression we’ve covered on the show was Wild Turkey Longbranch, a collaboration with Matthew McConaughey that strays from the typical Wild Turkey profile. Rare Breed, however, brings us back to the heart of Wild Turkey’s offerings, offering a bold, uncut experience that many bourbon lovers swear by. While the iconic Wild Turkey 101 has never been a personal favorite, Bob decided to take the plunge with Rare Breed after hearing countless recommendations—and it didn’t disappoint. Let’s get into the details!

Nose

Bob: Right away, the nose on this is really woodsy, with a lot of oak coming through. There’s also a floral note that I wasn’t expecting, which adds a nice layer of complexity. On top of that, I’m picking up some classic bourbon sweetness—corn, caramel, and even a bit of cola. It’s got that Coca-Cola spice to it, which I love. I’m giving this an 8.5/10.

Brad: I get the oak and the floral notes too, but for me, there’s a slight sharpness that reminds me of sour grapes. There’s a nice mix of vanilla and caramel underneath it all. It’s definitely got a twist to it, but in a good way. I’m giving the nose an 8/10.

Taste

Brad: Wow, the taste on this is fantastic. I wasn’t getting much spice on the nose, but it’s here in the taste—a mix of cinnamon or maybe licorice. The sweetness is balanced perfectly, and that oak foundation is present without being overpowering. This is a really well-rounded bourbon. I’m giving it an 8.5/10.

Bob: I’m with you on that spice note, and it’s definitely got a cola vibe to it. It’s smooth for such a high-proof whiskey, which is dangerous! This drinks so easily that I could see myself downing more than I should. I’m giving the taste an 8/10.

Finish

Brad: The finish is where the proof really makes itself known. You get a beautiful Kentucky hug that’s not overwhelming, but definitely there. Those floral notes from the nose make a comeback, and they linger nicely. I’m really impressed with how long this finish lasts. I’m giving it an 8/10.

Bob: I think this is where the oak really shines. There’s a bit of that Coca-Cola flavor left on the palate, but the oakiness takes over in a good way. The finish isn’t as smooth as the palate, but it’s still enjoyable. I’m giving the finish a 7.5/10.

Balance

Brad: In terms of balance, this whiskey hits all the right notes for me. The flavors from the nose carry through to the palate and the finish, making it one of the most well-balanced bourbons I’ve had. I’m giving it an 8.5/10.

Bob: I think the balance here is solid, but it’s not quite as smooth as I initially thought. That Kentucky hug is a bit stronger than I remembered from my first pour. It’s still a very well-balanced whiskey though, so I’m giving it an 8/10.

Value

Brad: At $43.99 in Ohio, this is a fantastic value for a barrel-proof bourbon. If I had someone who was just starting to explore higher-proof whiskeys, I’d point them straight to Wild Turkey Rare Breed. I’m giving it a 7.5/10.

Bob: I agree, Brad. When you compare this to something like Old Forester 1920, which costs $10 to $15 more, Rare Breed holds its own. It’s hard to find a better barrel-proof bourbon at this price point. I’m giving it a 9/10.

Final Scores

Bob: I’m coming out to a final score of 41/50.

Brad: I’m at 40.5/50.

That brings our combined score to 40.75/50, or 81.5/100. Wild Turkey Rare Breed firmly hits that upper echelon for us, crossing the critical 40-point threshold where we confidently recommend buying a bottle. If you’re looking to add a great barrel-proof bourbon to your collection, Rare Breed should be at the top of your list.

Conclusion

Wild Turkey Rare Breed offers a smooth, bold drinking experience that balances high proof with approachability. At just under $50, it’s a fantastic value for anyone interested in barrel-proof bourbons. Whether you’re a seasoned bourbon drinker or someone looking to explore higher-proof whiskeys, Rare Breed delivers a satisfying and flavorful pour that won’t break the bank. It’s a definite buy recommendation from us!
