Whisky Review: Maker's Mark Cask Strength Bourbon

Whisky Review: Maker's Mark Cask Strength Bourbon

Introduction

Today, we’re diving into Maker’s Mark Cask Strength Bourbon, a bolder take on the classic Maker’s Mark. This is one of the most popular wheated bourbons on the market, a fan favorite known for its consistency and availability. What makes this particular expression exciting is that it’s cask strength, meaning it’s bottled straight from the barrel without dilution, resulting in a higher proof and more robust flavors.

For this review, we’re sampling a 110.9 proof bottle, which features the traditional Maker's mash bill: 70% corn, 16% wheat, and 14% malted barley. It's non-age stated, but we’re guessing it’s at least four years old. Let’s see if this cask strength version can live up to the reputation of the classic!

Nose

Bob: The nose on this is really floral and dusty, reminding me of the "Will It funk" I’ve come to love. You get notes of fresh dark cherries, and it’s not overly sweet. I’m also picking up a ton of wood—though I wouldn’t say it’s a classic oak note, maybe more like cherry wood? Either way, it’s a great balance of cherry, wood, and floral notes, with just a hint of dustiness. I’m giving this an 8.5/10.

Brad: For me, there’s loads of caramel right upfront. It’s got that cherry cola vibe, some vanilla, and even a note that reminds me of oats, like sticking your nose into a fresh container of Quaker Oats. I’ll give the nose a solid 9/10.

Taste

Brad: On the palate, the cherry cola continues to shine, and I’m getting some dark chocolate and raisin flavors mixed with caramel. It’s incredibly flavorful. I’m giving it an 8.5/10.

Bob: This whiskey hits you with a unique experience. It’s both oily and thin at the same time. The alcohol is really prickly, but it coats the tongue in the best way possible after you swallow. The prune and dark fruit notes are fantastic, and the cherry wood from the nose carries through nicely. It’s a bit of a firecracker, but that’s part of its charm. I’m going with a 9/10 for the palate.

Finish

Bob: The finish really pulls everything together for me. It’s wheat, tangy, and almost has that sarsaparilla or root beer-like essence, especially after you swallow. There’s a wisp of smoke without any bitterness, which I love. I’m giving it an 8.5/10 on the finish.

Brad: I totally agree. The oak comes forward more on the finish, along with that cherry and vanilla, and it develops into a slightly tangy, root beer-like flavor. I’ll also go with an 8.5/10 here.

Balance

Brad: I’m a huge fan of this whiskey’s balance. It’s complex, flavorful, and everything works together beautifully from start to finish. I’ll give it a 9/10.

Bob: I’m right there with you. This whiskey is super consistent from nose to finish. The only thing I’d say is that the alcohol is more aggressive upfront than you might expect from 110 proof, but I still love it. I’ll also go with a 9/10 on balance.

Value

Bob: Maker’s Mark Cask Strength sells for around $45 here in Ohio, and honestly, that’s a fantastic deal for what you’re getting. It’s at least as good as other bourbons that cost more, like Old Forester 1920. I’m giving it a 9/10 for value.

Brad: Totally agree. At $45, this is an amazing buy. It’s readily available, high quality, and won’t break the bank. It’s definitely a 9/10 on value for me too.

Final Scores

Bob: I’m coming out to a total score of 44/50.

Brad: Same here, 44/50.

Conclusion

Maker’s Mark Cask Strength is a phenomenal bourbon, especially considering its price point. At $45, it competes with higher-priced offerings and delivers big, bold flavors that make it a standout. With its complex nose, flavorful palate, and balanced finish, it’s a no-brainer for any bourbon enthusiast. Whether you’re looking for a reliable bottle to keep on your shelf or something new to try at a bar, Maker’s Mark Cask Strength is a fantastic choice.

We typically recommend whiskies that score at least a 35/50, and with both of us landing at 44/50, this one is a definite buy!
